The Evelyn Dexter Arthur Collection is housed in the Basloe Genealogy Room. The collection consists of more than 600 genealogical research books, more than 100 three-ring binders of locality files, and various publications. Included in the collection are many New England Historical and Genealogical Registers, Palatine Immigrants, American Genealogists, National Genealogical Society Quarterlies, military registers, hand-indexed obituary and clipping books, and much more.
The genealogy collection is available for researchers any time the library is open. A computerized obituary index, a selection of historical maps, census records, city directories, and the Herkimer Evening Telegram newspaper on microfilm from October 1924 to the present are also part of the collection. Two genealogical databases, Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest, are available at Basloe Library on all the public access computers.
Assistance in using these resources is available during regular library hours.
PLEASE NOTE: The Library does not have local cemetery records. The Herkimer County Historical Society will have them. The Library and Historical Society do not have New York State birth, marriage, or death records or certificates. New York State did not mandate this until after 1880. You may write to the Town or Village Clerk where the event occurred or to Albany. For more information, see the New York State Library’s Archives and Vital Records website.
